Fire safety

Fire safety starts early! We took Kyle and Erin to the fire/police complex here in South Haven last night for their fire safety night. Kyle had a great time and was quite upset when it was time to leave. This morning he got up and the first thing he said to me was, "Fire truck station?" When I said that yes, we had gone there last night he said, "Go back again now?"

Unfortunately, the thought of fire safety brings sadness this week because Wednesday afternoon I watched all the South Haven fire trucks stream onto our street to put out the flames at the house across the street. While structurally it is standing, I would have to believe the inside is gone based on what I saw (and couldn't see from the amount of smoke.)

The huge blessing in this tragedy is that the people who live there and their dogs are safe. The smaller blessings are that with all the road construction it came a day after cement trucks lined the streets doing curbing; they would have delayed the trucks. The newly installed fire hydrant worked perfectly. The cement for the driveway approach was poured today and not Wednesday, so firefighters were not trying to get through wet cement with hoses. And it happened on a day when there was not a massive hole in the street that would have blocked the trucks, as there has been day after day the past two months. While a terrible fire, if those things had not fallen into place as they did it could have been much worse for that house and neighboring houses. Please keep this family in your prayers.

Back to a happier note... here are pictures of Kyle's big night out! The kids got to do some things that were both educational and fun. Here is Kyle aiming the fire hose at a target of wooden flames. They would fall over from the pressure.
My growing boy has seemed so big lately, but in this picture he looks tiny!
And I couldn't decide which of these I liked better. This is post-bath but pre-pajamas. Apparently after fighting a fire it is best to sit around in just a red fire hat and matching red cast. ;-)

Very cool, as you saw we had a fire station night oo. I'm so glad the departments do soemthing like this...the kids love it and it's great awareness. I will keep that family in my prayers as they try and rebuild their lives.
